Falafel Portobello Burger Recipe from Eat Clean Body Lean

Walker and I love a restaurant in Toronto called Tabule. It’s middle eastern, healthy and delicious food! One of my favourite menu items there is the falafel salad with tahini. This recipe is inspired by that dish.

As you might have noticed, this is a recipe in Eat Clean Body Lean our 21-day fitness & nutrition program that is now available!

Falafel Portobello Burger
  1. - 1 cup chopped red onion
  2. • 1⁄2 cup chopped fresh parsley
  3. • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  4. • 1 tsp ground cumin and ground coriander each
  5. • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
  6. • 2 (15 1⁄2-ounce) cans chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
  7. • 2 whole eggs (Can’t eat eggs? Combine 2 tbsp of ground flax or ground chia and 1/3 cup water. Let sit until it becomes egg-like, about 3-5 minutes.)
  8. • 2-4 garlic cloves, minced
  9. • 1⁄2 cup ground almonds aka “almond flour”
  10. • Optional: 6 whole Portobello mushrooms
  12. • 1 cup hot water
  13. • 1⁄4 cup tahini (sesame-seed paste)
  14. • 4 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  15. • Pinch salt
  16. • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  1. Combine all the burger ingredients into a food processor (or mash with a potato masher) and process until smooth. Divide burger mixture into 6 patties. Let sit in fridge for 1 hour as it helps the burgers to solidify.
  2. Cook on a greased fry pan on medium heat for 5 minutes each side or until outside is nicely golden.
  3. To make tahini sauce, place ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  4. For the Portobello mushroom either grill or pan sear until warm.
  5. To serve, place burger on top of the portobello and drizzle with sauce! Makes 6 burgers.

  • This look so YUMMY. I might try this out before I decide whether or not to do Eat Clean Body Lean. I’m a little worried about getting the meal plan & all the recipes will have an excessive amount of ingredients & i’ll end up spending double on my grocery shopping. But this looks reasonable!

    • Hi Melanie,

We try to set up the meal plans with an eye to the budget and time considerations of the participants (e.g., lunch the next day will sometimes be leftovers from the previous day. And there are always little tweaks that can be made to help with the cost (e.g., using the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 when buying produce. Please feel free to drop us a line with any questions you have about Eat Clean Body Lean. Hope your Falafel Portobello Burgers turn out delicious!

  • These look amazing! Do these freeze well? I am wanting to make these just not sure if my husband and I will eat 6 patties. Thanks so much. Take care.

  • Hi Joy,

Yum! This recipe is delicious. I had a problem with these binding, and I followed the recipe exactly. Any suggestions to help with this?
